A Memorable Stay at Lucero

Lucero pool New Year

A RECENT VISITOR’S THOUGHTS ON HER VISIT TO LUCERO

My husband and I decided to do something different for Christmas this year. Instead of our usual jaunt to Florida or the Caribbean, we opted for a golf holiday in Panama.

We flew into David, and drove to Boquete.  Going up Calle Raideep, to our destination – Lucero Golf and Country Club, I couldn’t help but wonder how someone came up with the idea of putting a golf course in this secluded, mountainous region.

As our days at Lucero unfolded, so did the answer to my question.  We arrived with few turns in the road to a gated community with breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains with stunning, spanning golf course.

We settled into our three-bedroom rented villa with a quick unpack and a refreshing swim. After we booked our golf games for the week we headed back to the main town of Boquete, a mere 15 minutes drive. Boquete is such a charming town with quaint bakeries, cheese spots, wine stores, cafes, restaurants etc.  We filled our grocery needs amply, including fresh vegetables from the farmers’ stalls and fresh fish caught just that morning from a vendor near the local grocery store, Romeros.  We were settled in our villa in a few hours armed to enjoy our week ahead.

Waking up each morning to bird sounds and glorious unhindered views of the golf course from our bedroom was a rare treat. The course with the side lies, uphill lies and elevated greens, is challenging. One that brings you back over again. When the golf score wasn’t  great, it didn’t matter.  The fresh mountain air with stunning views everywhere – especially like the ones on number 3 and 14, made up for it.

We loved having fresh foods; the taste is incomparable.  Our new find was the lemon lettuce…which became our choice of salad filler.  Other than the local market stalls, there is a weekly farmers’ market on Tuesdays where we found wonderful preserves and honey. We ran into many Lucero residents in town – it was like a weekly church bazaar where all the locals get together.

The villa’s fully equipped kitchen with a gas barbecue made making our farm-to-table meals a pure delight.  At our evening meals we were often graced with stunning sunsets followed by heavenly starry nights.

Of course, when we didn’t feel like cooking we ended up at the Seasons restaurant, part of the Lucero Clubhouse.  The pizza oven along with a full menu of  fresh fusion delights and the incredible selection of wines and fresh gelato made Seasons our favorite hangout especially when we didn’t want to go into town.  The chef became aware of our tastes  and surprised us with culinary delights to suit our palette. On Christmas Eve, he obliged us with a turkey meal that we could take to the villa to enjoy with our children who were joining us for Yuletide celebrations.

The clubhouse with an infinity swimming pool, a lounge area and bar was an oasis after a round of golf.  The beautiful red (clay) tennis courts with purple floral vine fences just steps below the clubhouse were almost always busy with lessons or games. We even got to watch parts of a local championship round robin match on the first few days of our week.

By week’s end, we were sad and in want of going back soon to this secluded haven. The tranquil days and nights, the fresh air, the challenging golf course and the fresh, easily available and very affordable food was a perfect vacation for us busy city dwellers. Next time we will aim to bring our tennis gear and try Lucero’s tree houses, which are spectacular and oh so well appointed.

A bientot Lucero.
